Tis The Season For Dill
We made a really nice brunch discovery the other weekend: Vinoteca in DC. Firstly, they have a bottomless drink deal, which we didn’t take advantage of, but was enticing all the same. But also: great toast, ginger butter for the pancakes, which I requested for my toast, seasonal specialties — and the best omelet Ive had in a while: dill and goat cheese.
I made it for my siblings...
Only The Best Little Sisters Make You Breakfast
My little tot sister is in town for the week! And she knows the way to my heart. This morning she made me her special oatmeal recipe, and I have to say: she’s learned the art of breakfast from the best. To stovetop oatmeal add: banana, a tablespoon (or more) of peanut butter and cinnamon. Yum!!
Also: I got a new phone! So now my shitty photos won’t be quite as shitty.
Its Been A While, But I'm Back!
Since we last spoke, Ive acquired a lovely, yellow dining set for my balcony, and broke it in with a beautiful breakfast this past weekend. Look what I had: Fried eggs, smoked salmon, goat cheese, toast, avocado with balsamic. Best way to break fast and bask in the glorious spring sun!

Snow Day, Crepe Day
Are you snowed in? Well have I the breakfast for you.
Crepes!
Classic batter recipe. For filling: cream cheese+powdered sugar+lemon zest — and reduced raspberry jam.
A proper crepe should basically remove itself from the pan. It will bubble up slightly when it’s ready to be flipped.

Mark Bittman, This One's For You
I love Mark Bittman. I think his demonstrative videos are hilariously produced. And he has a great attitude about food: it’s no-nonsense love affair with a splash of levity. Anyways, I was drooling over his most recent recipe (ginger fried rice with egg), so I gave it a whirl this morning.
Problems:
- No white rice (had to use a mealier, brown alternative)
- Practically cut my finger...
Don't Go To Ulah Bistro.
Seriously, the food sucks. I was so insulted by the hollendaise, which Im pretty was pre-packaged.
For $12 I expect the real deal. This is why I often get it on the side — because there is nothing worse than eggs benedict smothered with a shit hollendaise. Eggs benedict, by the way, is a real litmus test for a good breakfast, so I often order it. And Ulah Bistro in DC has a definitively...
Sometimes You Just Have To Think Inside The Box
Like when it’s Saturday and you’re really tired, and want a carrot cake, but for once you just don’t want to make it from scratch, goddammit. Right, Mal? Box mix it is!
And sometimes you’re too lazy to make the perfect omelet for breakfast, and instead eat some carrot cake with coffee. I call it carrot coffee cake.
Goodbye Winter Doldrums, Hello Breakfiesta!
Malaka’s mom’s boyfriend sent us a recipe for chilaquiles a few months ago. I have been DYING to make it ever since — and we finally did this morning. We didnt have the necessary tomatillos, but it was still phenomenally delicious. Oh man. So good. Find the recipe (coming soon) on Malaka’s food blog, The Grand International.
Green Waffles? Why Not!
I stumbled into this little Belgian patisserie a while back (ok ok the web site it WEIRD) and have been DYING to go back for brunch for weeks. I finally went last Sunday and was NOT disappointed. I had the GREEN (vegetable) waffle with smoked salmon because I prefer breakfast of the savory persuasion. This guy is taking Belgian waffles to the next level! And I’ll just say: I can’t...
Having A Birthday? Have a crepe cake for...
I have wonderful friends who indulge my obsession. For my birthday in October, they made me an AMAZING multi-layered crepe cake:
crepe + nutella + strawberry + whipped cream + crepe, etc

pain perdu
or, as we say in american, french toast
i was going to trash some old bread, but to malaka’s aghast face i said, “fine. french toast it is.” so i made the custard the night before. but when i went to make the toast in the morning, i found the bread to be covered in mold. gross. but no sweat. i just put some fresh bread in a toaster to dehydrate it & proceeded as usual. &...
Not only did Kalee and Mason make homemade pretzels for our last night’s German game night, but also homemade MUSTARD. And you better believe I had it for breakfast this morning. Mark Bittman endorses savory breakfasts, so I’m just corroborating his thesis that anything can taste good in the A.M. My ziplock baggie system rendered it unphotographable (yep, that’s a word). But...
